Course Objectives
This course covers the second half of the Doctrine and Covenants
(sections 76-138 and the Official Declarations). You should be
stretched and strengthened, both intellectually and spiritually.
The course is intended to challenge you to discover new truths, and at
the same time grow in your
commitment to the gospel of Jesus Christ and the restored Church.
You should master the following information for quizs and
examinations.
- Be able to identify on a map all of the areas important in the
revelations.
- Know the people of the Doctrine and Covenants.
- Know the revelations by section number, historical background and
content of the revelation.
Your mastery will be assessed through a daily quiz and midterm and
final examinations.
- Daily quiz.
There will be an in-class quiz for each day of class. The quiz
will be graded in class and turned in during the first few minutes of
class. The quiz is
intended to cause you to read the material before you come to class so
that you can be involved in the discussion. The quiz will also
allow you to account for your attendance and scripture reading.
You cannot make up a quiz, but two quiz scores will be dropped to
account for unavoidable absences.
- Examinations. There will be a midterm and final exam
covering doctrine, important historical information and commentary from
the student manual. Sample questions and your current grade can
be found through the blackboard system.
- Term Paper. You will write a 5 page term paper at the conclusion
of the course. The number of pages is a rough suggestion. You should
perform a significant analysis of your concept. You should keep a journal of your observations to
give you ideas for this paper. As
you study the scriptures, you should record
answers to the following questions for use in your term paper:
- What did you learn from your study of the scriptures?
- What insights did you gain during your study?
- What verses stood out as being especially applicable to your
life?
Your paper should contain the following elements:
- A description of a concept that you learned as a result of studying the second half of the D&C this semester, or some concept that you are viewing in a new light.
- Your analysis of the concept supported by scriptural and authoritative sources
- A description of how you have experimented with this concept in your life.
Examples of concepts you could experiment with include:
- Visualize every person you pass as you cross campus as a Child of God and ask how you could help them.
- Experiment with bringing your Eye Single to the Glory of God by consecrating your posessions to Him and see how this impacts your perception of time.
- Share your testimony with others and see how this impacts the inspiration your receive.
Study the Book of Mormon daily and share your testimony of it to see if your mind is less darkened
- Strictly follow the council of church leaders from your ward, stake or general conference and notice the impact this has on your ability to receive inspiration.
- Seek inspiration on areas where you should repent and see how these changes impact the answers to your prayers
- Show mercy instead of revenge and notice the impact this has on the light you receive
- Eliminate some worldly concern and focus your attention on the Word (Word of Wisdom)
- Use the principles related to councils in section 102 in dealing with your family
- Experiment with the leadership principles in section 121.
- How you think that you could incorporate this concept into your life in the future.
Honor Code
I feel it a great privilege to be here at BYU and appreciate the
spiritual
environment that I find here. I think that the Honor code helps
to
create this environment and will do everything I can to promote
it.
Please dress appropriately and conduct yourself in a way that helps to
promote this environment. All work you turn in should be your
own.
Quote and reference anything that you turn in that was not written by
you.
